Chantal Dumas studied Music at Laval University (Quebec City) and Interactive Media at UQÀM. She works as an organizer and coordinator of events, curator, author and researcher. As a sound artist, Chantal Dumas explores the sound medium by producing radio fiction and fiction-documentary, electro-acoustic music, and sound installations.
She has received numerous awards for her work, which was nominated three times at the Phonurgia Nova (France) in the categories of fiction and fiction-documentary. She also received the sacem –SACD prize and the EAR competition (Hungary).
Her music and radio works have been widely broadcasted on radios and festivals in Europe and Canada, among them Deutschlandradio Kultur, WDR, Croatian National Radio 3, France Culture, Couleur 3 Radio télévision Suisse Romande, BBC, RNE Radio Clásica (Espagne), Sveriges Radio SR C, Radio-Canada, CBC, ABC (Australie), Festival Radiophon’ic (Bruxelles/ (Belgique), Sound Art Festival at Overgaden (Copenhagen/ Danemark), Deep Wireless (Toronto), …
Her music projects include her participation in the collective project Sound Matter (Darling Foundry) and at the FIMAV and, more recently, with the sound environment for the Stefan Nitoslawski’s sound-and-images exhibition (Cinémathèque québécoise, Montréal) and at the exhibition C’est arrivé près de chez vous, at the Musée National des Beaux-Arts du Québec (Québec). She started exploring new types of sound interfaces in some of her latest projects: sound conception of an Public Art project for the Montreal subway initiated by the visual artist Rose-Marie Goulet; CLUSTER for mobile listeners-interpreters and PDA (personal digital assistant), at the Banff Centre for the Arts; and a sound installation and performance at the radio REVOLTEN Festival (Halle, Germany), co-author Mario Gauthier. She is currently working on an interactive sound piece that questions mobility in relation with body movement, listeners, and sound. Her interactive sound installation Body Loop ou le vivant bruit du corps was first showed in June (08) in Toronto.
She enjoys collaborative work. She has worked on various projects with Rose-Marie Goulet [visual artist], Geneviève Letarte [poetry], Fortner Anderson [poetry], Aimé Dontigny, Danielle Palardy Roger, Le grand orchestre d’Avatar, Anna Friz et Emmanuel Madan. Julian Priest (UK), Joelle Léandre (Fr), Shelley Hirsch (NYC), Silvia Ocougne (Berlin), Christian Calon, Mario Gauthier and Isabelle Massu.
She is also research assistant for the Allance de recherche DOCAM and UQÀM for the project ÉTUDE DE CAS : Le Synchoros Instrument de musique électroacoustique gestuel of the composer Philippe Ménard.
She is at moment working on a music piece and a radio production for Deutschlandradio, Berlin.
